World Forum for the Process Industries
Hall 6.0, Booth D49
The Fraunhofer Chemistry Alliance presents current research activities of the participating institutes in the following key areas:
We look forward to your visit in Hall 6.0, Stand D49.
In the insect biorefinery, organic residues and waste materials are converted into high-quality chemical products. This is made possible by the insect larvae of the black soldier fly, which are fed with the waste. Their biomass is separated into the fractions proteins, fats and chitin in order to produce chemical products such as adhesives and coatings, lubricants and cleaning agents as well as plant fertilizers.
We also present biobased polymers produced from waste streams, such as polyhydroxyalkanoates PHA, a polyester produced in bacteria from municipal wastewater, and a polymer made from malic acid, which can be produced with fungi from food industry waste streams.
The utilization of biogenic resources is a key technology for a sustainable chemical industry, pilot plants essential for the commercialization of new products.
Fraunhofer CBP offers pilot plants and modular process capacities and a wide variety of processing and reprocessing techniques. We thus support start-ups and SMEs not only with the technical further development of chemical and biotechnological processes, but also with the provision of larger sample quantities for application research or with process data for studies on the feasibility of a manufacturing process.
Chitosan is already used in the textile industry as a biobased and environmentally friendly sizing agent. Due to its chemical structure with binding sites for additional functionalities, the renewable biopolymer is also suitable for sustainable finishing and fluorine-free hydrophobic finishing of cotton, polyester and blended fabrics. We have also already been able to adapt the finishing to paper and cardboard.
With our expertise in polymers, surfaces and coating technologies, we offer customers solutions that can be implemented quickly for the substitution of PFAS. Examples include hydrophobic coatings with non-stick plasma polymers as well as friction-reducing and chemical-resistant coatings (parylene, hydrocarbon/silicon organic-based plasma coatings).
Plasma coatings, embossed or printed structures can be used to protect surfaces from ice formation. Examples of applications include protecting aircraft wings or wind turbine rotor blades from icing. Fraunhofer IGB has also developed an easy-to-apply self-adhesive anti-icing film.
We cordially invite you to the presentations of our Fraunhofer experts!
