Horizon 2020

The 8th EU Research Programme

The Research and Innovation Programme Horizon 2020 combines all funding programs of the European Commission related to research and innovation. The priority areas are “Excellence Science”, “Industrial Leadership” and “Societal Challenges”.

In addition, Horizon 2020 covers also measures in pursuing the cohesion policy objectives (broadening participation), activities to increase social acceptance of science (science with and for society) as well as direct measures of the Joint Research Centre and the European Innovation and Technology Institute for integration of higher education, research and innovation.

Public-Private Partnerships in Horizon 2020

Fraunhofer IGB is involved in the PPPs "Sustainable Process Industry though Resource and Energy Efficiency" (SPIRE) as full member and "Bio-based Industries" (BBI) as associated member, both dealing with the issues of resource efficiency and sustainability.

Since 2019, the Fraunhofer IGB is also part of a large project in the PPP Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI).

European Institute of Innovation and Technology – EIT

The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) is an EU body created by the European Union in 2008 to strengthen Europe's innovative capacity. The EIT is an integral part of Horizon 2020.

It is a unique EU initiative that drives innovation across Europe by bringing together business, education and research to find solutions to demanding global challenges.

Fraunhofer IGB is part of EIT Food, EIT Raw Materials, and EIT Health.

Industrial Leadership

This pillar aims to speed up development of the technologies and innovations that will underpin tomorrow's businesses and help innovative European SMEs to grow into world-leading companies.

Societal Challenges

Horizon 2020 reflects the policy priorities of the Europe 2020 strategy and addresses major concerns shared by citizens in Europe and elsewhere. A challenge-based approach will bring together resources and knowledge across different fields, technologies and disciplines, including social sciences and the humanities. This will cover activities from research to market with a new focus on innovation-related activities, such as piloting, demonstration, test-beds, and support for public procurement and market uptake.

European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT)

EIT supports the development of dynamic, long-term European partnerships between leading companies, research laboratories and universities. These innovation communities are dedicated to finding solutions to a specific global challenge, from climate change and sustainable energy to healthy living and food.
