PCR technologies

PCR-based technologies form the basis for rapid identification and quantification of pathogens. Our focus is on the development of multiplex PCR systems for highly parallel detection of pathogens.

On their basis, methods for the diagnosis of viruses, fungi, protozoa and bacteria can be developed for customers from companies, hospitals and research institutions.

Using PCR-based technologies, the smallest amounts of nucleic acids can be amplified in a highly specific manner. This forms the basis for rapid, sensitive identification and quantification of pathogens.

Our focus is on the development of multiplex PCR systems for the highly parallel detection of pathogens. On this basis we develop procedures for the diagnosis of viruses, fungi and bacteria in contract for companies, hospitals and research institutions.

Reference projects

NALFA – Rapid diagnosis of pathogenic viruses

Lateral flow assays (LFA) are rapid medical tests that can be used regardless of location and equipment. For the detection of Herpes simplex virus 1 we were able to demonstrate a nucleic acid-based LFA. This enables rapid on-site diagnostics (point-of-care test) to identify the infectious agent. The test can also be further developed for diagnosis of the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.

STD-Array – Identification of pathogens with highly parallel diagnostics

On behalf of Immundiagnostik AG Bensheim, Fraunhofer IGB has developed multiplex PCRs as a basis for DNA-based microarrays for highly parallel diagnostics of sexually transmitted infectious diseases. Automated processing of samples should enable simplified and cost-effective diagnostics in a point-of-care test.
