At techtextil, the leading international trade fair for technical textiles and nonwovens, from May 14 to 17, 2019, in Frankfurt am Main, the Fraunhofer institutions which have joined forces in the Fraunhofer Technical Textiles Alliance will be presenting themselves.
As a member of the alliance, Frauhofer IGB will show its research work on the development and production of new insect chitosans and chitosane-based functional coatings for yarns and textiles.
Harmful chemicals are often used in textile processing. This is why Fraunhofer IGB is conducting research into harmless biobased alternatives. The institute is working on using residues from the animal feed industry to produce chitosan.
Due to its ability to form films, chitosan can be used as a sizing agent. These reduce friction and prevent fibres from roughening in the weaving process − after which they are either washed out again or remain on the fibre. In both cases, biobased, natural alternatives to existing synthetic agents would be advantageous for the compatibility of humans and the environment.
The second possible application is the functionalisation of textiles − i.e. the finishing of textile fabrics with specific properties.
