Plasma processes are also used at Fraunhofer IGB for the finishing of individual fibers. Many chemica functions can be applied to the surfaces. The use of plasma technology is particularly appealing for issues that are difficult to solved with wet chemistry.
An example is the selective inside or outside finishing of porous hollow membrane fibers established in research projects at the institute. Further developments are aimed at more cost-effective production of carbon fiber and improvement of fiber-matrix adhesion.
